EXTENSION AFTER CARE
FIRST 24 HOURS
For the first 24-hours or so, remember that it is normal for the extensions to feel a bit tight and uncomfortable because your scalp is not used to the weight of the extra hair you now have. If it is too uncomfortable to sleep, take an ibuprofen to help.
WASHING
When shampooing, do not scrub your scalp where your extensions are attached (where they sit will move down the hair shaft as time goes by) and never wash your hair upside down. Be sure to completely wash your full scalp to avoid the buildup of product and oil which may cause your extensions to slip. Washing in sections can make this easier. Daily washing and exercising often may cause your extensions to last a shorter amount of time.
Remember even though the extensions feel like your own hair, they need to be cared for more gently. Any conditioner that comes in contact with the attached area of the extensions will compromise their lifespan. If you do not regularly use conditioner, you will need to now. Your extensions do not get the same nutrients and vitamins your real hair does, so you must condition your extensions. Use conditioner from your ponytail area down to avoid any slippage. Also, do not use any leave-in conditioners or oil-based products close to your scalp.
BRUSHING
After you shower, do not leave your hair in a towel on top of your head. This will cause tangles and unnecessary stress on your extensions. When you brush your hair, use a Wet Brush. Never put tension on your extensions. We suggest brushing your hair prior to shampooing and conditioning. If you must brush your hair wet, which we do not recommend, hold your hair in a ponytail in a tight fist at the nape of your neck and brush hair with your other hand making sure there is no tension on the scalp.
When brushing, place your hand on the scalp while you brush until you feel comfortable enough not to brush the attached hair extension area. Throughout the day if your extensions get tangled, use an oil (mid-shaft to ends only). Never use a comb on the area between the scalp and the attached weft.
SLEEPING
When going to bed at night or exercising, pull your hair into a loose braid or ponytail at the nape of your neck. This will prevent tangling. Never go to bed with wet hair. This will cause the extensions to slip and/or come out. Using a satin or silk pillowcase keeps hair from tangling at night.
BLOW-DRY & STYLING
When blow-drying use a medium-low setting to dry your hair at the scalp and around the attached area. When styling your hair with thermal tools, avoid any contact with the attached area. Ask your stylist for your recommended heat setting. It is important to use a heat protectant on your natural hair as well as the extensions. Avoid using hairsprays as they are alcohol based and will dry out your extensions, limiting their lifespan.
DO'S & DON'TS
If you choose to use products that are not recommended, you will compromise the life of your extensions. Avoid immersing your hair in pool/jacuzzi water and the ocean. This will make the hair become dry & brittle, shortening the life of the hair you just invested in. If you do choose to swim or get your extensions wet, do not leave your hair up. Let it down and try to blow it dry as soon as you can.
Saunas may also compromise your extensions. If you loose any extensions, which is very likely to happen, we suggest that you keep those extensions in a bag and bring to your next visit where we will easily re-install. Please do not attempt to bleach or color your hair yourself. We cannot guarantee our work if there is tampering with the extensions.
MAINTENANCE
You must maintain salon aftercare for your extensions. If not, you will compromise the health and integrity of your own hair as well as shorten the life of your extension hair. Your extension hair can last up to 12 months with proper care and maintenance. Thermal styling will eventually cause the extension hair damage and may not be re used. As time goes by, you may have to purchase a partial amount of new hair to maintain the same length and fullness as your initial install. DO NOT attempt to remove hair extensions yourself! We can only guarantee our work if we personally maintenanced your hair.
MOVE-UPS
Ideally you must come in every 6-8 weeks for a move-up. You can go as long as 10 weeks but the chances of your hair matting will be very high. If you decide you no longer want extensions, you can contact us and we can schedule a removal.
CANCELLATION POLICY
When booking a hair service at TOPKNOT we require you to keep a credit card on file, as any non-covid related cancellations/reschedules that aren’t made 48 hours in advance will be charged 50% of the service that was scheduled. Less then 24 hours notice will result in a 100% charge.
